New Year's in Rome
Our trip to Rome, Italy was in the middle of our backpacking Europe adventure. We spent New Year's Eve and New Year's Day touring the city, taking pictures, and trying to not freeze! The temperatures the days we were in Rome were between 4 and 12 degrees, not to mention the horrific wind that made it seem about 10 times colder.
We arrived in Rome later than we had hoped as there were some problems with the train schedules. However, we still had time to check into our luxurious hotel (or our really sketchy and trashy hostel, we should have taken pictures because it was by far the worst we stayed in the entire trip). Despite the "$5 hostel" (that was our name for it) we knew that we would only be spending a short amount of time there that night to sleep, so we immediately took off to find some food. Of course pizza was a must!
We then made our way to the Colosseum. It wasn't hard to find our way as there were hundreds and thousands of people flocking in the same direction. I (Julisa) have never been in such a crowded area before! Not going to lie, it was quite frightening and uncomfortable. Somehow we managed to maneuver through walls of people in order to get a view of the fireworks at midnight. Despite the freezing weather, the alcohol being thrown everywhere, and the crazy amount of people, it was definitely worth it!
The following day, the first day of 2015, we knew we didn't have much time to tour on our own so we got to view Rome from a tour bus. It was the kind of tour that you could hop on and off wherever and whenever you wanted so that made it nice for us to take a pit stop at the Colosseum and at Vatican City. It was a clear day which made for great pictures!
When we arrived at Vatican City, everyone was running. So naturally we ran too! We had no idea where we were running or why but we weren't going to stop and ask. Before we knew it we could see and hear the Pope giving a New Year's speech! It was so awesome! I (Julisa) obviously had no idea what he was saying but Daniel quickly translated. Apparently he talked a lot about the importance of keeping a journal (which we tried to do during our trip but failed miserably).
Before we knew it, time was running out, so we quickly finished our tour of Rome and made our way to the train station where we went to our next destination, Venice, Italy. We had such wonderful experiences in Rome and made so many memories. Although we only had about 24 hours there, we think that 24 hours in Rome is better than nothing! We look forward to returning there again someday and spending more time there.
Enjoy our recap of our experience in Rome! If you want to see more pictures, feel free to check back on our Facebook page as we will be posting a full album for Rome and Vatican City. Thanks for watching! Feel free to leave comments!
(Also, don't mind our abnormally orange looking teeth, we had an orange for breakfast).
